Telecommuting Mid-Year Report 2017 Breakdown
To create the Virtual Vocations Telecommuting Mid-Year Report 2017 edition, we looked to the Virtual Vocations Telecommute Jobs Database to compile statistics on the best telecommuting states, companies, and job categories from January 1 – June 30, 2017.

Our Telecommuting Mid-Year Report 2017 breakdown includes detailed overviews of the data Virtual Vocations compiled for our top 10 lists for the best remote work states, employers, and career fields. In addition to providing charts that outline our findings in detail, we have also compared our most recent stats to our mid-year report from 2016.
Top 10 States for Remote Work
Of the 58,343 telecommute jobs Virtual Vocations’ team of experienced Researchers and Job Quality Specialists screened and published to the Virtual Vocations job board during the first half of 2017, more than 30,000 were telecommute jobs that allowed applicants to live and work anywhere within the U.S. However, some telecommuting jobs require that potential hirees be located in a specific state.
Location specific telecommute job openings are especially prevalent in fields like remote education or telecommuting nurse case management. Most often, Online Teachers and Remote Nurse Case Managers must possess licenses and/or certifications that are state-specific. The good news is jobseekers exploring home-based job openings in any category can find thousands of available telecommuting jobs coast to coast.
Using Virtual Vocations to search telecommuting jobs by location is easy if you follow these steps:

Did your state make our list of the Top 10 States for Remote Work?
Compared to our Telecommuting Top 10 Mid-Year Report for 2016, we noticed some similarities and differences in the best U.S. telecommuting locations:
- California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois remained the top five best states for telecommuting based on the number of available telecommuting jobs for those states from January 1 – June 30, 2017;
- North Carolina is a new addition to the list, bumping Minnesota from the top 10;
- Massachusetts fell from 8th to 10th place.
Top 10 Telecommute-Friendly Companies

To determine the Top 10 Remote Companies for the first half of 2017, we looked to data from our Companies Database and job board to extract the number of telecommute job vacancies from each employer that we researched, screened, and posted to our Telecommute Jobs Database from January 1 – June 30, 2017.
Telecommuting trends for 2017 help us to not only understand how remote hiring has changed over the last year, but also project events for the remainder of the year. Check out a few of our key remote employer hiring stats below, and view the complete findings in the graph ahead:
- UnitedHealth Group (UGH) remains the top company for recruiting telecommuting professionals. UHG is also a diverse remote employer, hiring qualified work-at-home and partial telecommuting professionals in areas like healthcare, nursing, information technology, customer service, management, project management, and more;
- Overall, telecommuting education employers made the most hiring gains since our 2016 Mid-Year Report; Kaplan, Inc., for example, rocketed to 2nd from 10th, with more than double the number of available telecommuting job openings for the mid-year than by this time last year;
- VocoVision, a teletherapy services and program provider, emerged as a telecommuting powerhouse in early 2017, with more than 700 telecommuting vacancies in only six months to take the 3rd spot on our top 10 list.

8. Oracle Corporation
Oracle Corporation is a multinational information technology and computer services company specializing in database management systems and other enterprise software products, computer hardware systems, business intelligence, and communications industry solutions. 9. Humana Inc.

Connections Academy is a division of the education company Connection Education LLC and an offshoot of Sylvan Ventures. The company provides a public school option with high parental involvement that students can complete from home. Connections Academy regularly employs K-12 teachers throughout the United States to work from home and instruct students online.

- Information Technology, Sales, and Healthcare continued to dominate all other telecommute job sectors;
- Account Management climbed two spots with to 4th, and had more than 2,000 telecommute job openings compared to the 2016 Mid-Year Report;
- Consulting, a diverse telecommuting job category found within nearly all other career sectors, climbed four spots to take 6th place.
