Summary of 2020 Remote Jobs Statistics

In 2015, Virtual Vocations began researching and aggregating remote work and virtual employment statistics into annual reports outlining key facts, trends, and insights into the state of remote work. During 2019, Virtual Vocations shattered expectations by logging 197% growth in the number of remote job postings added to the Virtual Vocations board from 2015 to 2019, but the surge in available remote jobs throughout 2020 exceeded even this unprecedented job growth.

Virtual Vocations - 2020 Year-End Report and Remote Jobs Statistics - Remote Job Board Growth - 2015-2020

Virtual Vocations has been a leading remote job board since 2007. In our company’s history, 2020 was the most successful year for remote job board growth. For the first time, more than 50,000 remote job openings were added to the job board in a single month. Better still, this record continued for three consecutive months with more than 160,000 remote job openings added to the Virtual Vocations database during the fourth quarter of 2020 alone.

Overall, more than 460,000 remote job openings were added to the Virtual Vocations job board in 2020, equaling a 53% increase in the number of remote jobs added to Virtual Vocations’ database from 2019 to 2020, and an impressive 355% increase from 2015 to 2020.

CEO’s Statement on the 2020 Year-End Report and Remote Jobs Statistics

The past year has seen unprecedented growth in remote jobs due to the effects of COVID-19. Pre-pandemic remote work rates had been climbing year over year, but the acceleration seen in 2020 has pushed working remotely to a whole new level, and we expect that to continue to fuel growth at a faster pace in 2021. We are excited about the progress that has been made with employers who have accepted remote work as a viable option for their employees. We anticipate the next year will bring even more opportunities for employees and employers alike to experience the advantages of remote work.

Top 10 Industries for Remote Jobs

The Virtual Vocations job board boasts more than 40 categories of remote jobs. Categories range from expected telework career fields like information technology and customer service to less obvious telecommute-friendly industries like human services and healthcare.

For 2020, the following remote career fields were the most prevalent for available remote job openings. Information technology, which has reigned as the top remote jobs category since 2016, continued its championship run as the number one field for remote work. Approximately 20% of all remote jobs added to the Virtual Vocations job board in 2020 were labeled as IT positions. Yet again, sales and healthcare rounded out the top three; however, they did flip-flop positions from 2019. Account management dropped from fourth to ninth and education moved up a spot from fifth to fourth. Financial remote jobs, which were not ranked in last year’s top 10, placed fifth. This was the highest jump in available remote jobs for any industry within our top 10.

Project management fell from sixth to 10th; meanwhile, human services changed one spot from seventh to eighth. Customer service moved up two positions to the sixth best remote jobs industry. Marketing, however, climbed three places from 10th to seventh. Consulting remote jobs did not make the top 10 this year; in 2019, consulting jobs were the ninth most prevalent remote work industry. Project management jobs entered the list as the 10th best remote jobs category.

Throughout the year, we witnessed scores of on-site employers and employees turn to telecommuting. Remote work was an avenue to keep their businesses and careers operational while also protecting the health and safety of their teams and communities. In fact, “The COVID-19 crisis forced over 95% of U.S. office workers to become regular telecommuters practically overnight,” according to Kate Lister, president of Global Workplace Analytics (GWA).
