June 2022 Remote Jobs Report
For the third month in a row, the U.S. jobs market is trending toward a four-day work week among total nonfarm payroll.
Virtual Vocations’ June 2022 Remote Jobs Report is an analysis of the state of hiring in the U.S., including the nationwide availability of fully remote jobs. We examined the latest in remote work statistics and trends, as well as U.S. employment data from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from May 2022, to determine the month’s best-of lists for remote work employers, states, and industries offering work from home, fully virtual, telecommute, and home-based jobs.
May 2022 Remote Hiring Summary
“Since February 2022, when we updated our job posting policy to require that all remote job postings be fully remote and require no field travel, May was our second-highest month for total remote jobs added to the Virtual Vocations database.”
In addition to noting the continued availability of fully remote jobs, Virtual Vocations CEO Laura Spawn also acknowledged trends we’ve witnessed during the first half of the year. “We’ve observed that workers are still prioritizing their values during their job searches. Jobseekers don’t just want any job; they want a good job with flexible options.“
Remote Work Report Spotlight
“Without a doubt, LinkedIn is the go-to-place for sourcing golden-rip talent. The problem? It’s the job seeker’s market in 2022.”
Passport-Photo.Online, the maker of a biometric photo booth app, polled approximately 1,000 workers in the U.S. to ask them about the worst mistakes employers make when hiring on LinkedIn. The survey results provide valuable insight into workers’ opinions about potential employers’ online recruitment tactics. For example, 64% of U.S. professionals can tolerate no more than one or two follow-up messages from recruiters on LinkedIn. Below, we have provided additional key findings from this LinkedIn recruitment survey.

BLS Jobs Report Data for May 2022
“Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 390,000 in May, and the unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent,” according to the BLS. This is the third consecutive month with a 3.6% unemployment rate as well as the same number of unemployed at 6.0 million. These numbers depict U.S. unemployment in a state practically the same as it was before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Prior to the pandemic, in February 2020, U.S. unemployment was 3.5% with approximately 5.7 million unemployed.
During May, some of the highest total job gains occurred in these remote-friendly career categories. Select any remote job industry hyperlink below to view fully virtual job options in those career fields:

- Education (+83,000) (This includes jobs in state government education, private education, and local government education)
- Professional and business services (+75,000)
- Transportation and warehousing (+47,000)

For the third month in a row, the U.S. job market is trending toward a four-day work week among total nonfarm payroll. The average work week is now comprised of 34.6 hours, according to BLS data, which could reflect American workers’ desire for a four-day work week, especially among professionals who want home-based jobs.
In a Virtual Vocations survey from March, we found that 77.97% of workers prefer a four-day work week. Most of these workers also want the four-day work week to be conducted within four eight-hour shifts. Survey respondents reported they can be just as productive working 32 hours per week from home as opposed to working a traditional 40-hour per week schedule.
Within its monthly jobs report, the BLS also published revisions of reported total jobs numbers. We noted two key changes among monthly jobs data calculated for 2022. Adjustments have been made to BLS jobs totals for March and April of this year. Updated figures reduce the total jobs added over this period by 22,000 jobs: -30,000 for March and +8,000 for April.

Fully remote job postings from more than 3,700 remote-enabled companies were posted to the Virtual Vocations job board during May. Below, we have provided an overview of the top 10 remote companies for hiring during the month. These employers alone were responsible for nearly 2,300 of the more than 19,000 remote job postings that appeared on our job board in May. Seven of the top 10 employers for May 2022 are also featured on our list of the “Top 100 Companies to Watch for Remote Jobs in 2022.”

We examined the latest in remote work statistics and trends, as well as U.S. employment data from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from April 2022, to determine the month’s best-of lists for remote work employers, states, and industries filling work-at-home, virtual, and telecommuting jobs.
April 2022 Remote Hiring Summary
“Throughout April, more than 20,000 human-screened fully remote postings were added to the Virtual Vocations job board—a 9.77% increase in remote hiring from March.”
Remote Work Report Spotlight
“The ability to work in a remote or distributed setting did more than decentralize workers from singular locations. In many cases, it empowered employees to consider an entirely new way of working.”
Oyster, a global HR software provider, conducted a survey to better understand the evolution of workplace priorities since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. In “The Employee Expectations Report 2022,” Oyster details their findings, which point to major shifts in worker expectations. Employees are not only more creative, productive, and successful but also willing to leave jobs and organizations with less than desirable wages, benefits, and conditions.
When it comes to defining these shifts in employee expectations, Oyster looks beyond the “Great Resignation” of 2021 and instead to the “Great Revelation” of 2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic, more employees than ever before got a taste of the flexibility and autonomy facilitated by remote work, and they want more. According to Oyster’s report, “What our research points towards is that knowledge workers are realizing that work can and should be different. Remote and distributed working has unshackled employees from the office and eliminated the drudgery of the daily commute.”

BLS Jobs Report Data for April 2022
“Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 428,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.6 percent,” according to the BLS. The number of U.S. workers who teleworked specifically as a result of the pandemic decreased 2.0 percentage points to 10.0% in March.

- Manufacturing (+55,000)
- Transportation and warehousing (+52,000)
- Professional and business services (+41,000)
- Financial (+35,000)
Gains are also evident in month-to-month and annual wage increases. According to BLS data, “Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 10 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $31.85 in April. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased by 5.5 percent.”
The BLS also published revisions of jobs numbers from February and March. New data analysis resulted in jobs numbers for those months being revised down by -39,000 jobs: -36,000 from February and -3,000 from March.

March 2022 Remote Hiring Summary
March was an exciting month at Virtual Vocations thanks to our seventh annual Remote Work Week event. In addition to providing remote jobseekers with new content and resources to improve their hireability and strengthen the outcomes of their remote job searches, we also provided jobseekers with increased access to 100% virtual, fully remote job postings and companies hiring now. As Virtual Vocations CEO and co-founder Laura Spawn attests, Virtual Vocations’ efforts culminated in double-digit job board growth for March:
“From February to March 2022 we logged an 11.74% increase in fully remote job postings screened by our team and uploaded to our job board.“
Remote Work Report Spotlight
From bread-winning to care-giving and household management, the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected working women, many of whom left their jobs to provide in-home care and education to their children. Will these difficult choices spell long-term consequences for women’s careers?
Deloitte conducted a global survey of nearly 400 working women in nine countries to learn more about how they have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including how their day-to-day lives have changed as well as whether these changes also altered their career progression.
The majority of women are also now responsible for a larger share of their household’s chores while also serving as primary caregivers, and as many as one-third adopted larger workloads.

BLS Jobs Report Data for March 2022
“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 431,000 in March, and the unemployment rate declined to 3.6 percent,” according to the BLS, which means the unemployment rate is only 0.10 percentage points higher than it was in February 2020 prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of U.S. workers who teleworked specifically as a result of the pandemic decreased 2.0 percentage points to 10.0% in March.

The BLS also published revisions of jobs numbers for previous months, totaling 95,000 previously unreported jobs. January 2022 employment was revised up by 23,000 jobs, from +481,000 to +504,000; February employment was revised up by 72,000 jobs, from +678,000 to +750,000.

March 2022 Remote Jobs Report
In 2022, approximately 1.16 million jobs have been added to the U.S. economy, with the unemployment rate nearly returned to its pre-pandemic level.
Virtual Vocations’ March 2022 Remote Jobs Report is an analysis of the state of hiring in the U.S., including the nationwide availability of remote jobs. We examined the latest in remote work statistics and trends, as well as U.S. employment data from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from February 2022, to determine the month’s best-of lists for remote work employers, states, and industries filling work-at-home, virtual, and telecommuting jobs.
February 2022 Remote Hiring Summary
February 2022 marked the first month of Virtual Vocations’ transition to a fully virtual job board. This transition was inspired by feedback from our jobseekers who wanted to see more remote job postings requiring no field-travel. According to Virtual Vocations CEO and co-founder Laura Spawn,
“February 2022 was our first full month of posting only 100% remote jobs to our job board. While we anticipated a decline in the overall number of available jobs due to our new, strict quality standards, we were pleased to be able to share more than 16,000 new, fully remote job postings with remote jobseekers and connect them with more than 3,200 companies filling 100% virtual roles with no travel required.”
Remote Work Report Spotlight
You may be proud of your job, but does it garner respect from others? A new survey report from Zety analyzes what it takes for a job to be considered respectable, and some of the top occupations are remote-friendly.
“Zety analyzed the opinions of more than 1,000 Americans to determine which occupations they hold in the highest regard. Caring for others and trustworthiness were the top factors that made remote-friendly occupations like doctor, scientist, teacher, nurse, and software developer rank among the most respected careers.”
Other top factors that make a job worthy of professional esteem include the job’s essentialness within society, the levels of intellect and education required to perform the role, physical ability required to conduct job duties, and high levels of salary and prestige.

BLS Jobs Report Data for February 2022
“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 678,000 in February, and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.8 percent,” according to the BLS, which means the unemployment rate has nearly returned to its pre-pandemic level of 3.5%. The number of U.S. workers who teleworked specifically as a result of the pandemic decreased 2.4 percentage points to 13.0% in February. This shift can be credited to a decline in the number of new cases from the Omicron wave of COVID-19 and some workers returning to on-site duties amid an increased rollout of hybrid work models.

- Leisure and hospitality (+179,000)
- Professional and business services (+95,000)
- Healthcare (+64,000)
Following recent months of large increases in average hourly wages, earnings for February were little changed and increased by only $0.01 over the month. Within the last year, however, average hourly wages increased by 5.1%.
The BLS also published revisions of jobs numbers for previous months, totaling 92,000 previously unreported jobs. December 2021 employment was revised up by 78,000 jobs, from +510,000 to +588,000; January 2022 employment was revised up by 14,000 jobs, from +467,000 to +481,000.

The number of jobs added to the U.S. economy increased 134.67% from December 2021 to January 2022.
Virtual Vocations’ February 2022 Remote Jobs Report is an analysis of the state of hiring in the U.S., including the nationwide availability of remote jobs. We examined the latest in remote work statistics and trends, as well as U.S. employment data from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from January 2022, to determine January’s best-of lists for remote work employers, states, and industries filling work-at-home, virtual, and telecommuting jobs.
January 2022 Remote Hiring Summary
Virtual Vocations’ team and our Employer Partners added more than 42,000 remote job openings to our job board during January 2022. From December 2021 to January, the number of total remote job postings added to our database increased 21.02%. Following another record-setting year of remote job growth in 2021, Laura Spawn, Virtual Vocations CEO and co-founder, emphasized the company’s renewed commitment to quality in 2022:
“The focus for Virtual Vocations in 2022 is remote job posting quality. We’re always looking for ways to give more remote jobseekers what they want in terms of quality remote job options. That’s why, as of February 1, 2022, all remote job postings added to our job board will be 100% remote job postings with no field-travel required.”
Remote Work Report Spotlight
We’ve all heard the saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words” but, when it comes to remote recruiting, could the quality of your LinkedIn profile photo help you land a job?
“To learn more about how LinkedIn profile pictures affect working professionals’ chances of getting a job, we surveyed 200+ HR pros, business owners, and managers.” Passport-Photo.online found that, “A full eight out of 10 respondents surveyed agree a candidate’s LinkedIn profile picture helps them get to know the person better, and 80% believe it’s an important ranking factor.”
71% of surveyed recruiters admit they rejected a candidate because of their LinkedIn profile picture at least once, despite proper job qualifications.
95% believe a LinkedIn profile is the modern equivalent of a business card; 96% say a professional LinkedIn profile photo shows confidence.

BLS Jobs Report Data for January 2022
“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 467,000 in January, and the unemployment was little changed at 4.0 percent,” according to the BLS. “In February 2020, prior to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, and unemployed persons numbered 5.7 million.” The number of U.S. workers who telecommuted specifically as a result of the pandemic increased to 15.4%—more than four percentage points higher than the approximately 11% of workers who telecommuted during December 2021.

Average wages also increased during January. Hourly earnings for all employees increased by $0.23 to $31.63. In the last year, the U.S. has experienced a 5.7% increase in average hourly wages.

Throughout January these 10 companies were responsible for more than 3,700 new remote job openings posted to our 100% virtual jobs database. Three new additions to the top 10 companies include Encore Semi Inc., an engineering solutions company; Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, a global insurance services provider; and Supporting Strategies, a bookkeeping and human resources services company. Seven of the top 10 employers for January 2022 are also featured on our list of the “Top 100 Companies to Watch for Remote Jobs in 2022.”

Nine out of 10 top locations for remote jobs remained the same from December 2021 to January 2022. Arizona dropped from the list and was replaced by Washington. We recorded a few changes in the top remote industries ranking from December to January. Healthcare fell from second to third, replaced by sales which moved up one spot. Marketing held onto the fourth spot with customer service dropping one position to sixth. Financial moved down one position to eighth with management taking over the seventh spot. Product management and project management remained ninth and 10th on our list of best remote career fields.
